Silent Collision There is an apparent contradiction in the title Silent Collision: the painting explodes, but makes no sound. It is a restrained impact, a blast that seems to have exhausted itself in an interior space, leaving on the canvas its traces, its wounds, its residues. Maurizio Castagna builds here a surface where the gesture is never merely impulse, but memory of the gesture; every mark seems to come from something that happened before and continues, stubbornly, to surface. The background, dominated by aquatic tones of green, turquoise, dusty blue, gray and white, does not constitute a passive setting. It is living matter, corroded, traversed, erased and rewritten again. On this cold atmosphere break in the black and the red: two presences of a profoundly different nature. Black builds, incises, separates; red wounds, accelerates, ignites. It is precisely in the relationship between these three chromatic universes that the painting finds one of its greatest strengths. Against the almost mineral calm of the greens and blues stands the emotional temperature of red, while black traverses the composition with the function of a load-bearing structure, a kind of visible skeleton of the painting. The large diagonals prevent the eye from finding a definitive position. They lead it, interrupt it, force it to change direction. Grids, drips, scratches, overlaps, fingerprints and sudden material concentrations generate different reading speeds. From afar Silent Collision has the immediacy of an event; up close it reveals instead a surprising geography of small happenings. Among these emerge enigmatic circular forms, crossed by filaments and black rays. We do not know whether they are cells seen under a microscope, stars, epicenters, primordial organisms, or simply the memory of a sign. And it is precisely this indeterminacy that makes them fascinating. Castagna does not give the viewer a symbol to decipher, but a presence to question. The mixed media thus becomes part of the meaning of the work itself. Different layers coexist without seeking a definitive smoothness: painting, matter, graphic gesture, drips and abrasions preserve the memory of their making. The surface does not hide its process; it exposes it. And here a particularly significant element comes into play: Silent Collision is born from the transformation of a previously painted canvas. The artist does not completely erase what existed, but absorbs it into the new composition. The previous painting survives beneath the current one as a buried memory. The painting therefore becomes, literally, a collision between two times: what was and what is. Perhaps this is the deepest key to the work. Not everything that is covered disappears. Castagna seems to understand this perfectly. He paints over memory without destroying it, allowing fragments, signs and prior stratifications to participate in the birth of a new identity. For this reason the title takes on an almost inevitable force: the collision concerns not only forms and colors but the past and the present, order and instinct, construction and dissolution. We are not facing decorative abstraction. The painting possesses unease. And its beauty arises precisely from the fact that Castagna does not try to pacify it. Where a more accommodating painting would seek harmony, he preserves the friction; where it would be possible to clean up, he leaves traces; where gesture could become elegant, he deliberately introduces a fracture. Beauty, here, does not coincide with order: it arises from the resistance of chaos to becoming order. Silent Collision fits coherently into Maurizio Castagna’s ongoing exploration, an artist with more than fifty-five years of activity, formed at the Academy Albertina of Fine Arts in Turin. Starting from solid figurative and classical experience, Castagna progressively shifted his research toward a freer, more material and gestural language, in which color, mark and stratification become tools for investigating the emotional dimension. Over his long career he has tackled large-format works and commissions of a monumental character, including The Lashing of Saint Stephen, about 3.50 × 2.20 meters. His path has been accompanied by editorial and documentary presences related, among others, to Bolaffi and Giorgio Mondadori, while his more recent production testifies to a further liberation of matter and gesture. Pigments, acrylics, enamels, resins and techniques borrowed from the artist’s extensive technical experience contribute to the construction of surfaces that do not simply want to be observed, but traversed. In Silent Collision this research reaches a particularly effective synthesis: energy and memory, matter and grafismo, accident and control coexist without cancelling each other. And perhaps this is what remains after looking at it: not the image of something, but the sensation that something has just occurred on the canvas. The noise is over. The collision remains.
