Offered in excellent vintage condition: original Cassina design armchair and ottoman The Cassina Maralunga armchair is a masterful design by Vico Magistretti. According to legend, one day Vico Magistretti was idly playing with a pack of cigarettes and conceived what new sofa he would design. The opening and closing of the pack gave him a unique idea: an adjustable backrest. Each backrest could be folded independently at a 90-degree angle, just like the cigarette pack. It became a remarkable success, and the armchair is still regarded as one of the most famous Italian design sofas. Quality, form, and comfort come together in Cassina’s design, which holds a patent on the innovative mechanism for the backrests. Crafted in beautiful exclusive Cassina Pelle wild boar brown sturdy leather - iconic design - MOMA museum - priceless patina - 1 owner (art gallery) incredible comfort The collection of the Italian label consists of many design classics and timeless designs. The Italian furniture brand Cassina is known for its design, quality, and timeless beauty. In manufacturing the furniture, only the highest quality materials are used, so each piece testifies to passion and craftsmanship. Cassina manages to form a perfect combination of innovative, industrial design and top quality. “I could never imagine designing furniture or anything that wouldn’t last long – it’s just something I couldn’t do. I have never made cardboard furniture or anything else that was designed to deteriorate. I think a good design should not be finite, but go in and out of vogue over long time spans, retaining its potency even after a hundred years.” A sofa that lasts for generations Say ‘Italian design armchair’ and you think ‘Maralunga’. This remarkable design dates from 1974 and is still one of the world’s most famous sofas. Maralunga is produced to this day by the Italian brand Cassina and is a design by Vico Magistretti (more about him later). His aim was to create a qualitative, comfortable design with the Maralunga — one that lasts for generations. In 1979, Cassina won a Compasso d'Oro award for the Maralunga design. This is the most prestigious prize for industrial design in Italy—and in our view the Maralunga more than deserved it. The armchair is truly a milestone in Italian design.
