Masterfully rendered from a single block of indigenous wood, this zoomorphic carving exemplifies the expressive sculptural shorthand characteristic of the Middle Niger Valley in Mali. The sculpture is dominated by an elongated, wedge-form snout subtly articulated with an incised oral fissure, balanced beneath arched orbital ridges that encircle deeply hollowed, almond-shaped eye apertures communicating directly through to the interior cavity. Surmounting the crown, two slender, upright horns are articulated with rhythmic transverse ribbing, a classic West African sculptural convention evocative of the speed, resilience, and spiritual vital force (nyama) associated with bush antelopes. The underside reveals an integral, hand-chiseled oval socket, establishing that the piece was conceived not as an independent figure or wall-mounted mask, but as a socketed marionette head engineered to be fastened to a rod armature during communal masquerade performances. The surface presents an authentic, unvarnished dry patina characterized by pronounced longitudinal shrinkage fissures, soft edge abrasions, and a sun-bleached tonality consistent with organic wood seasoned in a semi-arid Sahelian environment. Possessing both sculptural presence and rhythmic purity, the piece embodies the vitality of Western Sahelian woodcarving tradition. PROVENANCE Private collection, Germany.
