CAPA (Cornell), ed. — *The Concerned Photographer* New York, Grossman Publishers, 1968. 4to, paperback with illustrated black cover, full-page and in-text black-and-white photographs. First American edition of this work, which has become a landmark in the history of humanistic photojournalism. It was published following the 1967 exhibition organized at the Riverside Museum in New York by Cornell Capa’s Fund for Concerned Photography. The volume brings together photographs by six leading figures in 20th-century documentary photography: Werner Bischof, Robert Capa, David Seymour (known as “Chim”), André Kertész, Leonard Freed, and Dan Weiner. The edition is edited by Cornell Capa, with essays by Robert Sagalyn and Judith Friedberg. The collection serves as a kind of manifesto for “concerned photography,” a term coined by Cornell Capa to describe socially engaged photography in which the photographer does not merely document the world but seeks, through his work, to bear witness to the human condition and to influence how it is perceived. The book features an extensive collection of black-and-white photographs, including more than 175 images. Notable among them are Bischof’s photoessays from India, Capa’s photographs of war and European political movements, Chim’s work, Kertész’s humanistic compositions, and the works of Freed and Weiner. WorldCat describes the book as a collection of 175 images assembled by Cornell Capa for the Fund for Concerned Photography’s first major exhibition. The book occupies an interesting place in the institutional history of photography: the movement launched around *The Concerned Photographer* would lead Cornell Capa, a few years later, to develop the Fund and ultimately to the creation of the International Center of Photography in New York. Condition of the copy: complete, but the cover is heavily worn, with significant scuffing, scratches, creases, and chipping, particularly on the headband, spine, and corners; a small surface tear on the front cover. The interior is in significantly better condition, with a few foxing spots or small marginal marks visible.
