Camille Rousseau (1949) – The Elegant at the Beach – Berck-sur-Mer Atmospheric and particularly decorative beach scene by the French painter Camille Rousseau (1949), executed in oil on a wooden panel. The painting shows a lively summer scene on the beach of Berck-sur-Mer, the well-known seaside resort on the French Opal Coast. A party of elegantly dressed bathers has gathered on the wide sandy shore. Central figures sit and stand, several ladies in long dresses and hats under large parasols, while other figures stroll along the coast or enjoy the beach life in small groups. The composition is dominated by the characteristic parasols in soft shades of yellow, pink, white and blue. Behind them the calm sea and a light, cloud-filled sky create a sense of space. The warm ochre and sandy tones in the foreground contrast nicely with the blue-gray of sea and sky. Rousseau paints with a loose, impressionistic touch. Visible brushstrokes and locally fairly heavy applications of paint give the small work a lot of relief and liveliness. With some decisive color accents in red, blue, yellow, white and black, the figures and their clothing are suggested without dwelling on fine details. This places emphasis mainly on light, movement and the relaxed atmosphere of a day by the sea. The work is clearly signed lower left with "Rousseau" and bears an atelier stamp on the back. A certificate is also included with the painting. The whole is presented in a richly decorated gold-colored frame with classical ornamentation, which nicely complements the nostalgic French character of the scene.
