Camille Rousseau (1949) – The Elegant Ones at the Beach – Hardelot-Plage Atmospheric and particularly decorative beach scene by the French painter Camille Rousseau (1949), executed in oil on panel. The painting shows a lively scene on the shore of Hardelot-Plage, the well-known French resort on the Opal Coast. Spread across the wide sandy beach, elegantly dressed bathers enjoy a day by the sea. Ladies in long dresses and hats sit together under parasols, while other figures stroll along the tidal line. In the distance, a few sailboats are visible. The softly blue sky with light cloud formations and the tranquil sea form a beautiful contrast with the warm sand tones. Dark parasols and silhouettes alternate with vibrant accents of red, blue, yellow and white, giving the scene a pleasant dynamism. Rousseau employs a loose, impressionistic brushwork, with clearly visible brushstrokes and locally thickly applied paint. The figures are rendered with a few decisive strokes, making mood, light and movement central. The scene exudes the nostalgic atmosphere of fashionable seaside life on the French coast. The work is signed bottom left with "Rousseau" and bears an atelier stamp on the reverse. A certificate is also included with the painting. The whole is presented in a richly adorned gold-coloured frame, which nicely complements the classical French character of the scene.
