Title: Mother and Child: Rural Scene Technique: Oil on canvas Artist: Camille Roqueplan (1803-1855), French Romantic painter Year: 19th century, circa 1840 Format of the work: 63 x 50 cm Total format with frame: 77 x 64 cm Condition: Good condition Frame: Antique gilded and patinated wooden frame, with some signs of wear Born on February 18, 1803 in Mallemort, Camille Roqueplan is a major French painter and lithographer of the Romantic movement. Although gifted in drawing from childhood, he initially refused to make it his profession before training under renowned masters such as Antoine-Jean Gros and Abel de Pujol. He quickly emancipates himself from their academic style to embrace the Romantic insurrection of the 1820s alongside artists such as Paul Huet and Ary Scheffer. He first became known at the Salon for his landscapes inspired by his travels in Normandy, Brittany and the Pyrenees, but also for his seascapes. In parallel, Roqueplan becomes a brilliant pictorial illustrator for the authors of his time, such as Walter Scott, after whom he produced his famous painting The Death of the Spy Morris exhibited in 1827. His work, of great diversity, also includes historical genre scenes, refined portraits and lithographs. Around 1830, facing growing success, he opened in Paris a workshop that was heavily frequented by the artistic youth. Brother of the writer and director of the Opera Nestor Roqueplan, he married Joséphine-Coralie Prissette in 1844 and fully integrated into Parisian cultural life under the July Monarchy. Unfortunately, his health deteriorated worryingly due to illness. Stricken with tuberculosis, Camille Roqueplan died at the age of 52 on September 29, 1855 in Paris. His masterworks, praised for their sense of color and sensitivity, are today preserved in the most prestigious international institutions, notably the Louvre Museum, the Condé Museum of Chantilly, the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg and the Wallace Collection in London.
