CALIMA - Mixed technique: print with pigment ink, brush-on varnish applied by hand, for the durable protection of the work. A woman sleeps in a green velvet armchair, head tilted back, one arm folded behind the neck, the other hand abandoned on her thigh. She wears a red robe sprinkled with small green and gold leaves, open at the chest, its hem falling in folds to the bottom of the canvas. Behind her, a raspberry wall covered with large pink and coral flowers carried by dark green stems. On the right, a band of blue and white azulejos runs along the opening on a light background, and on a side table a green-glazed vase bears a purple flower. The decor takes up more space than the sleeper: the flowering wall occupies the top of the canvas, the robe occupies the bottom, and the body stands between the two, almost entirely covered. The painting does not seek the intimacy of a portrait; it looks at someone who does not know they are being watched. Nothing moves except the motifs. Crimson of the robe, raspberry of the wall, deep greens of the chair and the jar, blue and white of the pottery that stops the red on the right. The wall is built in a thick paste: the large pink and apricot corollas are the most loaded areas of the canvas, laid flower by flower, in relief. The robe, for its part, is brushed in long parallel strokes, speckled with many small green and gold leaves painted one by one. Mixed technique: print with pigment ink, brush-on varnish applied by hand, for the durable protection of the work. Varnish applied by hand, for the depth of the reds and the durable protection of the work. Support: premium canvas stretched on a wooden frame, ready to hang. Format: 40 × 60 cm. Signed CALIMA · Galerie Labo Joconde / Atelier Joconde · certificate of authenticity provided. CALIMA is one of the creations bringing together artists Le Yack, Neo Pablo and Popsan within Atelier Joconde, a family studio where three sensibilities coexist: neo-realism, pop and freie figurative. A calima is the sand haze that the Sahara blows over Spain: it yellows the light, thickens the air, and halts the houses. Under this name, the Studio paints only sleeping women in Southern interiors, where the decor occupies more space than the sleeper: blue azulejos, walls covered with flowers, fringed shawls and florid robes, quince, peaches and lemons placed in the pottery. The lineage is that of Nabi intimacy in Vuillard and Bonnard, where wallpaper and fabrics become the real characters, and the odalisques of Matisse, bodies abandoned in the middle of a saturated setting. Everything is painted in thick paste, motif by motif, until the room vibrates around a sleep that no longer moves. Each work is a unique piece. Instagram @atelierjoconde.
