All auctions / Ancient Art / Byzantine Bronze Coin pendant - Jesus Christ, King of Kings (No reserve price)

Silver-plated metal pendant, encapsulated for better preservation, with an A2 class follis corresponding to 40 nummi, minted between AD 976 and 1025 during the reigns of Basil II and Constantine VIII. It is attached to a modern 925 silver cord-type chain. In this era the emperors decided to withdraw their portraits from coins to place the image of Jesus Christ as a symbol of the supreme sovereign of the Byzantine Empire, thus reflecting the idea that the earthly emperor ruled only by mandate and divine grace. On the obverse appears the figure of Jesus Christ with a cruciform halo and holding the Gospel book. On the reverse the inscription "Jesus Christ King of Kings". It ships with a legal declaration sheet. Customs costs outside the EU will be borne by the auction winner.
