Byzantine bronze ring with a blue glass inlay (10th–12th century) Era: Late Byzantine period, about 10th–12th century CE Cultural attribution: Byzantine Empire Material: Bronze with blue glass inlay Dimensions: Ring size about 50–51 (inner diameter about 16 mm) Weight: 1.3 g Condition: Good; glass inlay fully preserved with age-appropriate wear, bronze with authentic patina Fine Byzantine bronze ring with a simple, slightly conical band and a centrally set, round blue glass inlay. The setting is integral to the ring body and slightly raised, which gives the ring, despite its light weight, a clear presence. Blue glass pastes were frequently used in the Byzantine world as a cost-effective substitute for precious or semiprecious stones and also carried symbolic meaning, for example as the color of the sky, the Divine, or protection. Such rings were worn in everyday life and could have both decorative and apotropaic character. The restrained form, material choice, and the glass inlay clearly point to dating in the mid-Byzantine period from the 10th to the 12th centuries. Provenance information: Acquisition date: 2025 Place of acquisition: Auction house in the Netherlands Previous owner: Private collection of Mr. P.N. from the Netherlands.
