Byzantine Bronze Belt buckle with inlaid geometric decoration. - 35 mm

Byzantine Bronze Belt buckle with inlaid geometric decoration. - 35 mm

Medieval belt buckle with embedded geometric decoration Epoch: Medieval, possibly Byzantine (6th-7th centuries CE). Material: Bronze with possible silver inlays. Measurements: 21 × 25 × 8 mm. Auction description: Interesting medieval belt fittings made of bronze, with a lobed profile and elaborated geometric decoration created by small metallic inlays with a silvery tone. The surface features curvilinear and dotted motifs arranged symmetrically, standing out against the dark patina of the metal. Its characteristic double rectangular opening structure allowed the passage and securing of a belt strap. A representative piece of medieval utilitarian silversmithing, in which functionality and ornamentation were combined. It preserves an attractive age patina, with good definition of its decorative elements. Condition: Good, showing signs of use and wear appropriate to its possible age. The piece presents a body with slightly concave sides, finished at one end by a small triangular appendage. Its frontal surface is richly decorated with a composition of spirals, volutes, and interlinked circular motifs, framed by two delicate lateral borders. Especial interest is the reverse, which retains two perforated loops intended for attaching the plate to the leather of the belt, evidence of its functional construction. This type of belt fittings constitutes an interesting manifestation of late antique and early medieval metalwork, when Byzantine artistic influence spread widely across the Mediterranean. It is particularly notable for its attractive archaeological patina, with olive-green, dark bronze tones and earthy golden nuances that enhance the depth of the ornamental motifs. Condition: Good apparent structural integrity, with the decorated plate and the two later loops preserved. Shows surface wear and earthy deposits compatible with its archaeological condition. It does not retain the ring or the buckle pin of the clasp. An attractive piece of early medieval archaeology, especially appreciated for the richness of its decorative motifs, the elegance of its design, and the preservation of its original mounting elements.
