REFUGE Bruno FERT (Born in 1971) At Abas, Soad and Melina. Grande-Synthe camps. France. 2016 Fine Art print on Hahnemühle Ultrasmooth paper, title and date inscribed, signed in pencil in the margin 32 x 25.5 cm (40 x 50 cm) These images tell what exile and migration are. These interiors sketch the mental universe of those on the road: their traditions, their aspirations, their personalities. They are no longer simply migrants, but merchants, young adults barely out of childhood or mystical artists. In front of the photographer’s lens, the “migrants” or “refugees” – generic terms that make us lose sight of their identity – are no longer silhouettes walking in the mud among tents, but faces that look at us… Above all, these photographs speak to the astonishing capacity of humans, whether nomadic or sedentary, to inhabit the place where they live, even for a short time, even a shack or a tent, from Calais. Bruno Fert — Documentary photographer Bruno Fert develops a deeply humanist body of work devoted to exile, migrations and the traversed territories. From disappeared Palestinian villages to the precarious refuges of migrants, he photographs less the event than its traces. With Passages, he continues this work on the routes of exile, revealing in the landscapes the marks left by those who try to reach Europe. A precise and silent photograph, where the landscape becomes bearer of memory.
