Late 20th century, glazed porcelain in various colors, all but one inscribed or marked with one of Bezanson's artist ciphers, or inscribed "Benedictine Monks Weston Vermont" to underside. Largest 7 1/2 x 4 7/8 in. diameter; Smallest 5 3/4 x 4 7/8 in. diameter Three with Skinner Auction labels to interior Brother Thomas Bezanson was born in Halifax in 1929, and graduated in 1950 from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. He began working as a potter in 1953 and six years later entered the Benedictine Monastery in Weston, Vermont. He lived and worked in the monastery for twenty-five years but, feeling that his artistic freedom was limited, he left to become artist-in-residence in the community of Benedictine Sisters in Erie, Pennsylvania. Brother Thomas's simple forms are complemented by a vivid array of glazes, which he creates himself from natural materials. (Bio Courtesy of the Smithsonian American Art Museum) Occasional sticker and glaze anomalies; three with light scuffing; one red chalice with mild glaze crazing, minor fleabites to rim, and two long cracks at the foot with some evidence of repair.
