Geode of Carnelian, Agate, and Amethyst – Brazil Natural geode from Brazil, worked and externally polished into an oval shape, with a large central opening that allows observation of the crystalline structure developed inside the rock. The specimen presents an interesting contrast between the smooth, shiny external surface, dominated by reddish-brown and caramel-orange tones, and the inner cavity, where clear crystallizations, golden hues, and small quartz crystals with delicate violet tones alternate. The outer part consists of siliceous material attributable to the chalcedony and agate family, with colors reminiscent of carnelian. The orange and reddish tones are generally associated with iron compounds, which can impart the microcrystalline silica colors ranging from honey yellow to reddish-brown. Approaching the central cavity, the structure progressively changes. The inner edge features a band of white to cream-yellow crystallization, characterized by a seemingly fibrous weave and numerous reflective surfaces. Toward the center, larger quartz crystals develop, with well-defined terminations, some of which show faint lilac and violet hues, compatible with the amethyst variety. The cavity traverses the specimen, creating an irregular opening that lets light pass through and allows observation of part of the crystallizations even in depth. The arrangement of the crystals is not uniform: along the edge, pointed terminations face toward the central space, while in the more interior zones groups of closely spaced crystals appear, with warmer and amber tones. Geodes of this type form when silica-rich solutions penetrate pre-existing voids in the rock. In subsequent mineralization stages, silica may initially deposit as microcrystalline chalcedony and later develop larger quartz crystals, when conditions permit growth toward the still-free space. The differences in color, transparency, and structure observable in this specimen reflect the complexity of such processes. The compact external part, the clear crystallin band, and the violet internal terminations document different modes of deposition and growth of silica. The external polishing enhances the translucence and warm tones of the agate, while the interior preserves the irregular appearance of the natural crystallizations. The oval shape, mounted on a black metal support, allows the geode to be displayed vertically and to appreciate the contrast between the worked surfaces and the crystalline ones. An specimen that unites, in a single object, two different aspects of natural silica: the compact, colored structure of chalcedony and the geometry of quartz crystals grown inside the cavity.
