BOYLESVE (René). *A Lesson in Love in a Park*. Brussels: Éditions du Nord, “Les Gloires Littéraires” series, 1927. In-8 (approx. 21 × 15.5 cm), paperback, illustrated and multitone-printed hardcover, 271 pp. and [a few ff.]. Color illustrations by Alexandre Benois, both within and outside the text. Edited by Paul Angenot and printed in Brussels by Ch. de Bruycker in Della Robbia type, printing completed on October 21, 1927. A BEAUTIFUL EDITION ILLUSTRATED BY ALEXANDRE BENOIS, the third volume in the “Les Gloires Littéraires” collection. Benois, a painter, set designer, and leading figure in the world of the Ballets Russes, here accompanies Boylesve’s novel with elegant, 18th-century-inspired compositions, printed in color, several of which are full-page. Limited edition of 1,076 copies for sale, including a single copy on Imperial Japan paper featuring Benois’s original illustrations, 25 copies on Imperial Japan paper, 50 on Holland paper, and 1,000 copies on pure Esparto vellum, numbered from 77 to 1,076, plus 40 non-commercial copies. One of the 1,000 copies on pure Esparto vellum, this one No. 749, containing the color illustrations. First published in 1902, *La Leçon d’Amour dans un Parc* is one of René Boylesve’s most characteristic novels: under the guise of a romantic chronicle inspired by the 18th century, the author ironically observes the amorous games and mores of a castle society, while a child gradually becomes its innocent witness. Benois’s refined illustrations complement this atmosphere particularly well: silhouettes, park scenes, costumes, and settings all enhance the text’s character, which is at once libertine, elegant, and slightly melancholic. This copy is preserved in its original publisher’s paperback binding, which is in particularly good condition for this edition. Cover is slightly browned and soiled, with a few small marks and scuffs; spine is noticeably worn with paper loss at the top, as visible in the photograph. Interior is in fairly fresh condition, with well-preserved illustrations. Untrimmed copy.
