Baroque-style Box with Scene of the Virgin and Child Jesus, early 20th century Decorative box from the early 20th century made of carved and polychromed wood, inspired by the ornamental models of European Baroque. The piece has a rectangular structure with a domed lid, completely covered by rich relief decoration composed of scrollwork, vegetal motifs, and intertwined elements of a botanical character, evoking the decorative exuberance typical of Baroque art from the 17th and 18th centuries. The lid houses an oval oil painting framed by a frieze of small raised moldings. The composition represents a devotional scene of the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus over a white cloth, in a maternal and intimate iconography. The work stands out for its warm and contrasted palette, with predominance of reddish, ochre, and blue tones, which reinforce the religious and emotional character of the representation. The exterior surface retains a dark patina that enhances the relief carving and highlights the ornamental details, creating an attractive play of light and shadow. The edges and reliefs show slight wear typical of the passage of time, contributing authenticity and historical value to the whole. Originally intended for the safekeeping of small personal objects, memories, or devotional items, this box combines the functionality of a everyday-use object with careful artistic execution. Its historicist aesthetics reflect early 20th-century taste for reinterpreting past artistic styles, particularly the Baroque, through decorative pieces with religious inspiration for both domestic settings and devotional spaces. Overall, it is an interesting piece of decorative arts that unites ornamental carving, polychromy, and religious painting in a work representative of the artisanal and cabinetmaking production of the early 20th century. Shipped with certificate and proper packaging.
