All auctions / Books, Maps & Manuscripts / Board game - Jeu de Bog - cardboard

A rare hand coloured 19th century French staking board, for a game called BOG. Nicely hand coloured onto a printed black outline. Overall in excellent condition, but with a touch of foxing. One section has a crease to the card. Green paper backing to the verso. The board is in a shaped box that has a hand coloured label to the top. Somewhat darkened. The lid of the box has splitting, and has now been reinforced with archival tape. Enclosed is a stiff card with the rules in French. This is slightly darkened, and has a crease to the middle, but still sound. The rules state that the game originated in America, and is a game for five or six people using 32 cards. An attractive set. Although there are sets available online, these are all printed lithographs. We have traced only one other hand-coloured example, in the Morgan Library, New York; copies usually seen on the market are printed in colour. Players put their stakes on the painted compartments, each representing a key card, and the hands decide who collects them. It belongs to the same family as the Nain Jaune The rules claim the game came from America - but uses a 32 card deck - which is very European. It may, like poker, have travelled from europe to French New Orleans - and then back. The only other example we’ve traced is in the Morgan Library. The Morgan names its court figures: Lancelot for the jack of clubs, Rachel for the queen of diamonds and David for the king of spades. PLEASE NOTE - WE ARE AWAY AT A BOOKFAIR FROM THE 28TH OCTOBER UNTIL THE 11TH NOVEMBER - SO WE PROBABLY CANNOT SHIP UNTIL OUR RETURN. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE.
