Antique Domino Set – Complete Double-Six Game – 28 Bone and Dark Wood Dominoes w Brass Spinners in a Wooden Sliding-Lid Box – Circa 1880–1920 Offered for auction is a beautiful and complete antique domino set consisting of 28 traditional domino tiles, housed in a charming wooden storage box with a sliding lid. This classic double-six domino game is an attractive example of traditional European game craftsmanship from the late 19th or early 20th century. The dominoes feature elegant ivory-coloured playing surfaces, believed to be made from natural bone, mounted on dark wooden bases, possibly ebony or another dense hardwood. Each domino has recessed black pips and a small central brass pin, traditionally known as a brass spinner. The contrast between the warm, naturally aged light-coloured surfaces, dark wooden backs and brass details creates a particularly attractive antique appearance. The complete set is housed in a rectangular wooden box with traditional interlocking corner joints and a sliding wooden lid. Traditional craftsmanship and materials The domino tiles appear to have been manufactured using the traditional two-layer construction commonly found in high-quality antique domino sets. The upper playing surfaces are believed to be natural bone, displaying a beautiful cream-coloured patina that has developed over many decades. The lower sections are made from dark wood, possibly ebony or ebonised hardwood, providing an attractive contrast and substantial construction. The black playing dots, or pips, are recessed into the light-coloured surfaces. Each piece features a small brass centre pin, also known as a spinner, which is characteristic of many traditional antique domino sets. The individual tiles display subtle variations in colour, surface texture and finish, reflecting their traditional construction and considerable age. The wooden storage box has a warm brown finish, visible natural wood grain, traditional corner joints and a practical sliding lid. Its simple construction and attractive aged appearance complement the dominoes beautifully. Complete double-six game The set consists of 28 domino tiles, corresponding to the traditional double-six domino game. This classic version of dominoes includes combinations ranging from double blank to double six and has been enjoyed by generations of players. Dominoes became a popular form of domestic entertainment throughout Europe during the 19th century, particularly in family homes, cafés, social clubs and private parlours. Antique domino sets were traditionally produced in a variety of materials, including bone, ebony, hardwood, brass and early synthetic materials. Sets combining light-coloured bone faces, dark wooden backs and brass spinners are especially appreciated for their traditional appearance and craftsmanship. Period and origin The construction, materials and style are consistent with traditional European domino sets from approximately 1880–1920, encompassing the late Victorian, Edwardian and early 20th-century periods. The exact country of manufacture, maker and production date have not been established. The set is offered as an antique European-style domino game, with its original-style wooden storage box and traditional two-layer domino tiles. Dimensions Approximate dimensions of the wooden storage box: Length: 19.6 cm (196 mm) Width: 6.7 cm (67 mm) Height: 5.3 cm (53 mm) Contents: 28 domino tiles, forming one complete double-six set, together with the wooden storage box. Condition The domino set is in excellent antique condition, especially considering its considerable age. The pieces display a beautiful, naturally developed antique patina, with subtle colour variations that add to their historical character and charm. The wooden box is also very well preserved, with an attractive aged finish. Overall, a wonderfully preserved antique game with a particularly appealing appearance.
