All auctions / Porcelain & Pottery / Blown glass unguentarium with fluted body. Roman culture, 2nd-3rd

Descriptio Measurements: 7 cm high x 4 cm in diameter. This interesting glass vessel belongs to the artisanal tradition of the Roman Empire and was intended for the storage and application of perfumes, aromatic oils, and ointments used in personal care, cosmetics, and certain ritual practices. The piece has a small body decorated with vertical grooves that add rhythm and visual richness to its surface, combined with a molded neck that facilitates handling and dispensing. Its design corresponds to a type of toilet vessel widely used during the first centuries of our era, when glass production experienced extraordinary technical and commercial development in the provinces of the Roman Empire. The introduction and refinement of glassblowing techniques allowed for the manufacture of lightweight, delicate vessels in a variety of shapes, making them suitable for use in both domestic and funerary contexts. Unguent jars were common items in the personal belongings of men and women in Roman society, especially for storing aromatic substances made from vegetable oils, resins, flowers, and spices from various regions of the Mediterranean and the Near East. These products played an important role in hygiene practices, body treatments, and religious ceremonies, and were also prized in the luxury trade. The fluted decoration of the body reflects the Roman artisans’ interest in combining functionality and ornamentation, using techniques that enhanced the glass’s appearance and created attractive light effects on its surface. This type of small flask has parallels in the repertoire of Roman glass discovered at numerous sites in the eastern Mediterranean, particularly in the ancient provinces of Judea, Syria, and Palestine, where a prominent glassmaking tradition existed. The piece is in good overall condition, with slight irregularities and surface alterations typical of its age, retaining its characteristic fluted decoration and the original shape of the neck. This piece is an attractive example of small-format Roman glass production and a testament to the customs related to perfumery and personal care in Antiquity. Provenance: Holy Land, discovered before 1978. Lot in international warehouse (outside the EU). For shipments to the European Union, import duties and/or taxes will apply and are the responsibility of the buyer.
