Ring Black Chalama Opal / Cabochon / new In 925 sterling silver set 9.7 mm x 8.1 mm Weight: 2.28 g / 11.4 ct New and unworn Ring size: U 54 UK N US 6.8 FR 14 Inner diameter: 17.2 mm Black opals, like their differently colored counterparts, occur as globular to knobby masses without recognizable crystal structure. Their beauty usually reveals itself only after the stone is cut and polished. Characteristic of this form of opals is their opalescence, which shines with an intense rainbow glow. Additionally, the base rock of the opal here is dark, gray to black, which gave it this name. Black opals form, just like other opals, from silica-rich fluids that crystallize in sedimentary or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic sheen is due to water inclusions inside this mineral.
