Pendant Black Chalama Opal / Cabochon / new Set in 925 sterling silver Includes leather cord (80 cm) Weight: 10 ct / 2.0 g (weighed without the leather cord) 18.1 mm x 11.2 mm x 6.2 mm New and unworn Black opals, just like their differently colored counterparts, occur as globular to knobby masses with no recognizable crystal structure. Their beauty usually reveals itself only after this material is cut and polished. Characteristic of this form of opals is their opalescence, which manifests as an intense rainbow sheen. Moreover, the host rock of the opal here is dark, grayish to black, which gave it its name. Black opals form, like other opals, from silica-rich fluids that crystallize in sedimentary or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic shimmer is due to water inclusions inside the mineral. Shipping as insured registered mail.
