2 stud earrings Black Chalama Opal / cabochon / new Set in 925 sterling silver Total weight: 1.18 g / 5.9 ct 6.1 mm x 6.1 mm x 15.6 mm New and unworn Black opals, like their colorfully different counterparts, occur as globular to knobbly masses without a recognizable crystal structure. Their beauty usually reveals itself only after the stone is cut/polished. Characteristic of this form of opals is their opalescence, which shows itself in an intense rainbow play of color. Additionally, the host rock of the opal here is dark, gray to black, which gave it its name. Black opals form, like other opals, from silica-rich fluids that crystallize in sedimentary or igneous rocks. Their characteristic sheen is due to water inclusions inside the mineral.
