A beautiful and fully complete 1976 Japanese pressing of Bill Evans Trio's Portrait in Jazz, issued on Riverside Records under catalogue number SMJ-6144 as part of the Jazztime Now!! series. This copy retains the distinctive gold/yellow Jazztime Now!! OBI strip together with the original Japanese insert — precisely the sort of complete presentation that makes these 1970s Japanese jazz pressings so attractive to serious collectors. Originally recorded on 28 December 1959, Portrait in Jazz captures one of the most celebrated trios in modern jazz: Bill Evans on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass, and Paul Motian on drums. The album stands as a landmark in the development of the modern piano trio. Rather than functioning simply as accompanists, LaFaro and Motian interact with Evans as near-equal voices, creating the fluid, conversational approach that became enormously influential on later jazz musicians. This Japanese edition is particularly interesting because it includes both the stereo and mono versions of "Autumn Leaves," resulting in a 10-track configuration.
