Bénédict Masson (1819–1893) - Retrato de Niña

Technique on support: Charcoal on paper Title of the work: "Child Portrait" Author: Bénédict Masson (1819–1893) Period: 1864 Country of origin: France Condition: Acceptable in accordance with age and use Overall dimensions: 57x46 cm with frame; 25x20 cm the canvas. Delicate charcoal portrait on paper, executed by the French painter Bénédict Masson, signed “B. Masson” and dated 1864 in the lower left. The work depicts a bust-length profile of a girl to the right, with hair pulled back and wearing a wide-necked dress; the soft modeling of the face and the use of light on the hairstyle and clothing demonstrate a sensitive and academic technique. Bénédict Masson (Dijon, 1819 – Paris, 1893) was a French painter, draughtsman, illustrator and decorator linked to the academic tradition and to 19th-century history painting. Born as Benoît Masson, he left his hometown early to complete his training in Paris, where he entered the workshop of Paul Delaroche, one of the most influential masters of French historical painting of his time. Delaroche’s teaching, famous for its historical subject matter with notable narrative precision and attention to detail, left a recognizable mark on Masson: rigorous drawing, a taste for the restrained expression of characters, and careful composition of costumes and figures. Masson debuted at the Paris Salon in 1840 and regularly participated in official exhibitions until 1881, building a career centered on grand historical, religious, mythological, and allegorical compositions, without abandoning portraiture and drawing. Throughout his career he received important decorative commissions for French public institutions. Notable among them are projects for the Conseil d’État and works intended for Les Invalides in Paris, a building closely tied to France’s military history and Napoleonic memory. He also cultivated editorial illustration, where he translated his mastery of the figure, chiaroscuro, and visual narration into smaller graphic formats. His output reflects the taste of the Second Empire and the Third Republic for reviving episodes of Antiquity, national history, religion, and literature. He is best known for compositions with historical subjects and portraits of military figures, such as the one dedicated to Marshal Davout, evidence of his interest in Napoleonic memory and the individual characterization of the figure. This infant portrait, signed and dated 1864, belongs to the mature phase of his career. Although it is an intimate work and a small-format piece compared to his grand historical scenes, it retains essential qualities of his language: precision in drawing, delicate attention to expression, and graduated use of charcoal to model the face, hair, and clothing. The piece thus offers a more personal and sensitive facet of Bénédict Masson, complementary to his role as a history painter and monumental decorator.
