Beneath the Eclipse - Clouded Leopard - Yuko Montgomery

Beneath the Eclipse - Clouded Leopard by Yuko Montgomery Painting 18.0 x 14.0 :: Under the glow of an eclipsed moon a clouded leopard pauses at the edge of the forest. Its amber eyes are alert and its body is still but ready. The painting is about the quiet presence of an animal that moves through the canopy almost unseen. I painted the leopard in detailed realistic oil giving particular attention to the cloud-shaped markings that give the species its name. Each rosette is edged in deep shadow and softens into warm gold fur. Fine whiskers and soft fur catch the moonlight. Around the leopard stylized foliage drifts like mist setting the realism of the animal against a dreamlike almost mythic night. Clouded leopards are among the most elusive wild cats in the world. They live in the forests of Southeast Asia and the Himalayan foothills. With this piece I wanted to capture their beauty and their calm watchful presence: a rare moment of being seen.
