Bechar 003 meteorite was discovered in the Sahara Desert in 2022

Bechar 003 Lunar Meteorite — This authentic fragment comes directly from our natural satellite: the Moon. Classified as a lunar feldspathic breccia, the Bechar 003 meteorite was discovered in the Sahara desert in 2022, in one of the most remote and arid regions of planet Earth. It is a rare example of lunar rock that reached us thanks to a powerful meteoritic impact that projected material from the Moon's surface into interplanetary space, eventually causing it to fall to Earth. Feldspathic breccias are among the most common types of lunar meteorites and represent fragments of the Moon’s upper crust, composed mainly of plagioclase (primarily anorthite), with dark, vesicular or crystalline clasts, cemented together by a fine matrix. Bechar 003 displays a heterogeneous structure, with clear contrasts between light and dark zones, typical of rocks formed as a result of violent impact events. The cut reveals a polished surface that exposes a complex internal texture: a mosaic of lithic and glassy fragments fused together by extreme energy. This type of meteorite is particularly valuable for studies of the Moon’s geological history, as it contains traces of ancient volcanic flows, multiple impacts, and the evolution of the lunar crust. Lunar meteorites are extremely rare: they account for less than 0.5% of all known meteorites. Each fragment is a direct testimony of the cratered surfaces of our satellite, and constitutes a tangible connection to space missions, the dreams of human exploration, and the ancestral desire to touch the sky. An authentic fragment of the Moon, destined for collectors, planetary science enthusiasts, and anyone wishing to safeguard a piece of the history of our solar system.
