All auctions / Music & Musical Instruments / Beatles - Revolver (UK) – Early -2/-2 Mono – ULTRA RARE E.J

A particularly desirable early 1966 UK mono pressing of Revolver, featuring the XEX 605-2 / XEX 606-2 matrices, the sought-after "Dr. Robert" variation and, most importantly, the considerably scarcer Ernest J. Day & Co. sleeve. Released in August 1966, Revolver represents one of the great turning points in The Beatles' recording career. Tracks such as Taxman, Eleanor Rigby, I'm Only Sleeping, Love You To and Tomorrow Never Knows showed just how dramatically the group had moved beyond their earlier pop sound. This copy belongs to the very early UK mono production period and carries the classic black-and-yellow Parlophone labels with "THE GRAMOPHONE CO. LTD." perimeter text and the contemporary "SOLD IN U.K. SUBJECT TO RESALE PRICE CONDITIONS, SEE PRICE LISTS" statement. Particularly interesting is the early "Dr. Robert" wording associated with the original 1966 artwork and label production. Later copies corrected the title to the fully written "Doctor Robert", making surviving "Dr. Robert" examples an appealing variation for the specialist collector. One of the standout features of this particular copy is the sleeve. Original UK Revolver covers were manufactured by both Garrod & Lofthouse and Ernest J. Day & Co., but surviving E.J. Day examples are encountered considerably less frequently and are especially desirable amongst Beatles sleeve-variation collectors. The Side 2 -2 lacquer carries historical significance. The extremely short-lived XEX 606-1 cut contained the famous Remix 11 of "Tomorrow Never Knows." Production was quickly stopped and Side 2 was recut, with the -2 lacquer introducing the standard Remix 8 heard on virtually all subsequent original UK mono copies. Both sides retain comparatively early EMI production details from the original 1960s manufacturing run. ⸻ Sleeve (VG+): The scarce original Ernest J. Day & Co. laminated flipback sleeve remains structurally strong and displays very nicely. There is some age-related yellowing and light staining to the rear together with modest general handling wear, but the front remains attractive and the overall presentation is strong → VG+ Inner Sleeve: Original period inner sleeve included. Vinyl (VG+): The vinyl retains a very attractive original gloss. There are a number of fine hairlines and some light playwear visible under strong light, but there are no major or seriously distracting marks. Overall the surfaces remain a solid and attractive VG+ → VG+ ⸻ Details * UK mono first pressing * Parlophone PMC 7009 * Black-and-yellow Parlophone labels * "THE GRAMOPHONE CO.
