Bayley (John Oliver, literary critic and novelist, husband of Iris Murdoch, 1925-2015) 10 Autograph Letters signed and 14 Autograph Postcards and cards signed "John" & 10 envelopes to Dr Ralph and Penelope Tanner, with several mentions of his wife Iris Murdoch, v.s., together 17pp. and 25 sides, New College & St Catherine's College, Oxford & n.p., n.d., [c. 1970s], chatty and friendly letters, thanking them for the gift of cakes and jam, praising Penelope Tanner's biography of E.M. Dell, "I was particularly struck by the way you made interiors come alive, the house & garden & the rooms & dining room & the door which squooshed", and his time in hospital with a fractured leg, "... I am still devouring your wonderful jams - the damson & the quince (Iris actually brought me one of my pots, like pooh bear to comfort me in hospital!)", folds (c. 40 pieces). *** Penelope and Ralph Tanner were close friends and next door neightbours to John Bayley and Iris Murdoch in Steeple Aston, a small village in Oxfordshire.
