BAUMANN (Émile). — Memoirs. The World as I Saw It. Lyon, La Nouvelle Édition, 1943. In-12, approximately 19 × 12.5 cm, 396 pp., with a portrait of Émile Baumann by his wife as the frontispiece and supplementary documents. A posthumous first edition of the memoirs of the writer Émile Baumann (1868–1941), published two years after his death. Institutional catalogs confirm the 1943 Lyon edition and a page count of 396 to 400 pages, depending on the counting method used. One of 150 copies numbered on vellum by Édition des Papeteries de France, the only copies printed on fine paper, as indicated by the print run notation visible on this copy. This limited edition is also confirmed by the bibliographic copies currently cataloged. This copy is housed in an elegant contemporary binding: midnight blue half-morocco with corner caps, a four-ribbed spine, the author’s name and title in gold lettering, and covers of marbled paper in shades of blue and gray, with matching endpapers. The covers are likely original but should be verified. The volume opens with the printed dedication “To my young, unknown friends, for whom my experience may not be in vain,” followed by a portrait of the author drawn by his wife. The work is Baumann’s retrospective account of his generation and his literary and intellectual encounters. The binding is sturdy and decorative, with some scuffing and minor wear, particularly at the corners; one upper corner has a small tear or lifting of the marbled paper. The paper has uniformly browned, as is often the case with this wartime edition. Nevertheless, the book is well-preserved overall.
