Batesville, Arkansas. Bank of the State of Arkansas. 1839 $5. PCGS Currency Fine 12 Apparent. Missing Upper Left Corner Tip; Small Edge Tears. No. 142. Plate C. Situated on the White River, Batesville was once an important riverine port that served as the "gateway" to Northern Arkansas for settlers. Here a branch of the Bank of the State of Arkansas was established in 1837 but that branch as with other branches of the parent bank suspended specie payments which ultimately saw this institution liquidate in 1843. The bank itself was considered a "total loss and complete failure" per the Whitman Encyclopedia of Obsolete Paper Money Vol. 7. PCGS Currency comments "Missing Upper Left Corner Tip; Small Edge Tears." Estimate: $300 - $500. Provenance: From the Caine Collection.
