Bateman Family. A rare George III Butter Spade made in London in 1794

These pieces were smaller versions of the usual serving slices and were used to serve butter pats, canapes or small pastries. As you will see from the images, the spade has a triangular shaped blade which is pierced with a band of foliate motifs, in addition to being engraved with prick dot and wriggle work borders. The silver section of the handle is decorated with reeded bands and is attached to the blade with a bi-furcated moulding. The far end of the handle is made of turned fruitwood and the reverse of the blade displays a very crisp set of marks. Length of 8.25 inches, 20.63 cm. Width of the blade, at the widest point, is 1.55 inches, 3.88 cm.
