Authentic Turkmen Ersari (or Beshir) Kapunuk (often also referred to as jhallar or tent-header). The material is a very dense, hand-knotted wool-on-wool weave with traditional asymmetric knots. This is characteristic of the Ersari and Beshir nomadic tribes along the Amu Darya river in Central Asia (the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan border area). The use of deep rust-brown, navy blue/black, and the distinctive ochre-yellow and cream-white accents is very characteristic of this region. The long, braided strands that extend into two-tone wool tassels on the sides served not only for decoration, but moved with the wind at the entrance of the yurt. This helped keep flies and insects outside the tent. The deep rust-brown and dark blue tones indicate the use of traditional dyes (such as madder for red/brown and indigo for blue). Based on the wool quality, the specific geometric patterns (including the stepped diamond and bird motifs) and the natural dyes, this piece most likely dates from the period 1900–1940.
