Ring of Australian Opal / new Set in 925 sterling silver Weight: 1.94 g 7.0 mm x 5.5 mm New and unworn Ring size: U 51 - 52 (sits exactly between) UK K 1/2 - L 1/2 US 5.9 FR 11 - 12 Inner diameter: 16.35 mm The opal is a mineral from the mineral class of "Oxides and Hydroxides." As an amorphous solid, opal (like glass) has no crystal structure and typically appears as a massive vein filling or nodular formation. Opals are processed exclusively into gemstones. The word opal was borrowed from the Latin opalus or the Greek ὀπάλλιος opallios for 'precious stone' and presumably traces back to upala from Sanskrit. According to Allan W. Eckert in his work The World of Opals, this term was used to designate various rocks, while the early Hungarians called opálbánya opal mines. Opals were already regarded in antiquity as particularly valuable gems, sometimes valued even higher than diamonds. Pliny the Elder wrote: "[…] it has a fire of its own, fine as that in the carbunculus, it possesses the purplish spark of the amethyst and the sea-green of the emerald and an utterly incredible play of light."
