Austin, Texas. Republic of Texas. 1839-41 $1. PMG Very Fine 30. No. 3959. Plate B. A tough denomination among the Obsoletes issued by the Republic of Texas. This mid-grade $1 is nonetheless a fine item for the collector relative to the $10s, $20s, and $50s which are regularly encountered at auction owing to the context in which these notes circulated. Issued amidst a period of relative economic and political instability for the nascent Republic, denominations like the $1, $2, and $3 were often worth 2% to 4% of face value in contemporary foreign exchange markets making the utility of these notes limited even when they circulated. Yet historical context aside, this example is particularly attractive for the grade assigned as the cancellations noted by PMG are relatively subtle and fail to take away anything important in visual terms making this a premium example sure to command a strong bid. PMG comments "Cut Cancelled." Estimate: $800 - $1,200. Click here for certification details from PMG.
