Attributed to Joseph Mallord William Turner R.A. (1775–1851)...

Attributed to Joseph Mallord William Turner R.A. (1775–1851) - Shipping in an Estuarine Dockyard, possibly the Lower Thames, watercolour and pencil on paper, attribution to the artist inscribed to the mount, present full sheet: 23.2 × 16.5 cm, later frame: 37.5 × 30.5 cm. The subject appears to represent one of the busy shipbuilding or commercial reaches of a British estuary. The lower Thames at Blackwall, Deptford or Northfleet provides the closest presently identified comparison, although the Medway at Chatham or Sheerness remains possible. No sufficiently distinctive architectural or topographical feature has yet been identified to establish the location securely. The shipping and general character of the scene are consistent with a represented date in approximately the first third of the 19th century, circa 1800–35.
