Attribué à Adrien Simoneton (1862-1949) - La chaîne du Mont-Blanc

Old oil on wooden panel attributed to Adrien Simoneton (1862-1949), depicting the Mont-Blanc range as seen from the Brévent. Adrien Simoneton is a French painter, decorator and cabinetmaker, notably known for his mountain landscapes and his depictions of the Mont-Blanc massif and the Chamonix region. The work offers a wide alpine panorama dominated by snowy peaks. A mountain refuge appears in the foreground while the valley and the various reliefs unfold in green, blue, gray and orange tones. The painting bears at the bottom right a signature that can be read as « Ad Simone ». An ancient handwritten inscription visible on the reverse reads: « La chaîne du Mont-Blanc vue du Brévent » Attribution to Adrien Simoneton is offered with caution due to the subject represented, the composition, the painting technique and the visible signature. → CHARACTERISTICS • Proposed attribution: Adrien Simoneton (1862-1949) • Signature visible at the bottom right: « Ad Simone » • Title inscribed on the reverse: La chaîne du Mont-Blanc vue du Brévent • Technique: oil on wooden panel • Estimated period: first half of the 20th century • Estimated origin: France • Subject: alpine landscape and Mont-Blanc massif • Old wooden frame with moulded decorative details included • Total dimensions with frame: 75 × 64 × 6 cm • Weight without packaging: slightly under 3 kg • Provenance: work acquired at an auction house in France → STATE OF CONSERVATION Old, fair condition with visible signs of aging and use. The painted surface shows several scuffs, scratches, abrasions and small losses of material. A long clear vertical mark, presumably a scratch or abrasion of the paint layer, is visible on the left part of the landscape. Other occasional wear is visible in the sky, on the mountains and in certain parts of the foreground. The old frame shows scuffs, soiling, wear of finish as well as small chips and decorative losses. The panel has no major visible cracks. The back preserves its ancient handwritten inscription, its fastenings and its hanging system. No recent restoration is known. The photographs show deliberately: • the painting as a whole • the signature • the handwritten inscription on the reverse • the back of the panel • the long vertical mark • the various surface wear marks of the painted surface • the condition of the frame • the fastenings and the hanging system The work will be carefully protected with foam corner pieces, multiple layers of protection, rigid plates and a double packaging suited to its antique frame
