Athol, Massachusetts. Millers River Bank. 1860 $3. PCGS Currency Very Fine 30. No. 10680. Plate A. A great rarity for the likes of Massachusetts. This mid-grade $3 Obsolete issued by the Millers River Bank of Athol is one of a small handful of genuine obligations known on this Worcester County-based bank that took a National charter in 1864 and ultimately fell to receivership in 1933. Here excellent eye appeal is readily observed alongside the penned signatures of Cashier Alpheus Harding (Jr.) and President Seth Hapgood while what appears to be a rounded stamp cancellation dated "JUN 22 1863" may be seen on the back. This institution ultimately became the Millers River National Bank of Athol (Charter# 708) in 1865. Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500. Provenance: From the Caine Collection.
