French School of the First Half of the 19th Century Workshop or follower of Louis Charles Auguste COUDER (1789-1879) « Scene from Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare » Oil on canvas, No apparent signature, Beautiful, finely executed work of the French school of the first half of the 19th century depicting a scene from Romeo and Juliet after William Shakespeare's play: "Romeo, believing Juliet dead, poisons himself beside her; when the sleeping draught she had taken wears off, she wakes, but to receive the final sighs of her lover." The painter has managed to convey the emotion of this tragedy, notably through the expressiveness of the faces, especially Juliet's, as she mourns Romeo's death. We can compare our work with Auguste Couder's painting "A Scene from Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare" kept at the Musée des Beaux‑Arts d'Angers and exhibited at the Douai Salon of 1821. As well as a Chinese ink drawing by Couder (MBE Angers) that reproduces our work. Another unknown work by the painter Couder on the same subject was shown at the Arras Salon of 1821. Note also that a copy after Couder made by the painter Henri Bougenier was exhibited at the 1828 Salon "Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare". Note: Old minor restorations are visible on the back of the canvas. Dimensions: 59.5 x 73.5 cm without its frame and 76 x 92 cm with its original gilded wooden frame. -- An purchase invoice is issued for every purchase.
