Ashworth Brothers P&O Shipping Line Ironstone Demitasse Cup and Saucer

Ashworth Brothers, Hanley, England. Earthenware cup and saucer set produced for the P&O (Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company) shipping line. The set features a cream-colored body with hand-painted banded decoration. The cylindrical cup includes a single green stripe on the interior rim and an exterior band of two red stripes flanking a central green stripe. The loop handle features a vertical red stripe. The saucer is decorated with a central band of two blue stripes flanking a green stripe, with a rim band matching the exterior of the cup. The underside of both pieces bears a black transfer-printed mark consisting of the letters P . & O within a laurel wreath, above the text Ashworth Bros and England. Two hand-painted red diagonal slashes are present on the base of each piece. Faint, illegible impressed marks are present on the saucer base.
