Rare Serial Number 1 Series of 1902 $5 Date Back Ardmore, Pennsylvania. $5 1902 Date Back. Fr. 593. The Ardmore NB. Charter #9905. PMG Choice Very Fine 35 EPQ. Serial Number 1. Moderately circulated just by accounting for the grade assigned. This note nonetheless has the markings of a souvenir that was deliberately saved around the early 1910s by virtue of the type this note represents. Now Series of 1902 Date Backs are often difficult to find regardless of the denomination or issuing bank owing to the fact that these notes were issued as a result of the Aldrich-Vreeland legislation which came into law in 1908 and expired in 1915. To that end, the Ardmore National Bank (Charter# 9905) organized at the perfect time to issue these rare notes and surprisingly a pair of survivors from the first sheet of $5 Date Backs are known per the National Bank Note Census. Emblazoned at left below the portrait of Benjamin Harrison, one may observe "1" overprinted in a denim-blue shade while penned signatures attributable John Winthrop Claghorn and President Frank K. Miller lend additional testament to the originality of this item which has earned an assigned grade of Choice Very Fine 35 EPQ from PMG. Yet perhaps the most tantalizing aspect about this item is the fact that Serial Number 1 Date Backs regardless of the denomination are roughly twice as rare as Serial Number 1s representative of the previous type making this a truly tough note bound to appeal to the discerning specialist. Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000. Click here for certification details from PMG.
