Two engravings by Matthäus Merian I, taken from 'The Campaigns of Alexander the Great' by Antonio Tempesta, published in Germany in the 1620s. Copies trimmed to the plate edge, on laid paper, backed onto modern cardboard, in good condition (see photos). Each features a German verse inscription above the image and a Latin two-line verse on two columns below, with the series number in the lower right corner. In plate 4, Alexander's troops prepare for the clash with Darius's Persians; in plate 8, Alexander triumphant is welcomed by a subjugated population.
