Anton Heyboer (1924-2005) - Who is woman

This expressive work by Anton Heyboer (1924–2005), with a sheet size of 72 × 98 cm, shows two highly stylized human figures facing each other. The bodies are depicted frontally, while the faces turn toward one another. Both figures raise their arms, creating an almost symmetrical, rhythmic composition. Above them, in red letters the text ‘WHO IS WOMAN’, which is included as an independent pictorial element within the scene. Heyboer works with a distinctly limited palette of bright yellow, blue and red against the light ground. Broad, direct brushstrokes define both the contours and the large color fields. The paint handling is deliberately irregular: locally some parts of the paper remain visible and along the edges splashes, smears and interrupted lines arise. The simplified anatomy, mask-like faces and the combination of figure, text and color give the sheet a powerful graphic character. Biografie kunstenaar Anton Heyboer (Sabang, 1924 – Den Ilp, 2005) had a strong international museum presence, especially in the sixties and seventies. His work was from the 1960s acquired several times by the Museum of Modern Art in New York and was included in Documenta II (1959), III (1964) and 4 (1968/1969) in Kassel. Kunstmuseum Den Haag collected his work from the 1960s and organized in 1967 a major survey of his graphic oeuvre; in 2017 a new retrospective followed there. Heyboer developed a very personal visual language in which human figures, writing, numbers, signs and recurring symbolic structures come together. Etchings initially formed an important focus of his oeuvre, but in addition he worked with drawings, paintings and photography. The Rijksmuseum holds a substantial collection of his prints and drawings.
