All auctions / Miscellaneous / Antique wax seal in mother-of-pearl and silvered metal - France
Elegant and refined antique desk seal (wax seal stamp) dating to the end of the 19th century (Napoleon III Era / Late 19th Century), of clear French manufacture. The object stands out for the splendid baluster handle in precious natural mother-of-pearl with iridescent reflections. On the side of the handle is a refined period engraving in elegant cursive (Anglaise script) bearing the name of a French locality (identifiable as "Avesnes"), evidence of its origin as an exclusive souvenir or high-fashion object of the era. The collar/connecting ring is finely worked in silvered metal with ornamental decorative motifs. The most notable and highly collectible feature is its square matrix, completely VIRGIN (smooth, never incised). The object has never been personalized, preserving its original era manufacturing state as an unopened warehouse find. Technical Details & Specifications Type: Antique desk seal / wax seal stamp (Sceau cachet de bureau) Era: Late 19th century (circa 1880–1900) Origin: France Height: 7 cm Weight: 25 grams Handle material: Iridescent natural mother-of-pearl Mounting material: Silvered metal / Silvered bronze Matrix state: Virgin (smooth, unincised) Matrix shape: Square Overall condition: Good, consistent with age and use of the object. The mother-of-pearl retains its natural luster. Some small era-related aesthetic imperfections are noted on the edge, including a small and solid conservational reattachment on the metal connecting edge, which does not compromise the piece’s stability or structural beauty in any way. It presents a beautiful natural patina on the metal. Please view the gallery carefully, which shows in detail every feature and sign of time, functioning as an integral part of the description.
