Toi-et-Moi rings are among the most romantic pieces of jewellery there are. Their very name, which comes from French and means “you and me,” makes them the perfect gift of love. In 1796, Napoleon Bonaparte presented his future wife, Joséphine de Beauharnais, with such a ring to celebrate their engagement. In this type of ring, two gemstones set opposite each other always symbolize the union of two souls. This sentimental motif was particularly popular around the turn of the century: people loved playing with symbols. In the imagination of the time, a man and a woman stand facing each other as lovers—recognizable as distinct elements, yet firmly bound by their feelings and symbolically united in a single piece of jewellery. In the case of this ring, it is a sparkling diamond and a shimmering natural pearl that are joined together on the dynamically curved ring band, as if in an eternal dance. The ring was crafted in the years just before 1900 from warm, lustrous gold with platinum shoulders. Smaller accent diamonds accompany the two main focal points of this graceful creation. The large diamond, in the so-called Old European Cut, weighs approximately 0.65 ct. The ring is in very good condition and serves as a beautiful testament to the romantic days of yesteryear.
