Bows and garlands were popular motifs not only in 18th-century jewellery but also throughout the 19th century. With its stylized bow motif, ribbons of Bohemian garnets, small pearls, and dangling pendant, this brooch is a prime example of a garnet piece of jewelry from around 1870. At the same time, however, it is a reference to a style that was popular in the late Baroque and Rococo periods: the so-called Sévigné brooch. The Marquise de Sévigné (1626–1696) was a lady of the French court well-versed in fashion, with a pronounced preference for bows. Her passion quickly became a model for elegant Parisian women. Before long, it was no longer just tailors who were crafting these bows from velvet and silk brocade, but also jewelers who were creating them from precious gemstones: the Sévigné brooch was born—a brooch characterized by a horizontally oval bow motif with pendants hanging from the center. Our brooch features gemstones set in gold-plated tombac, in keeping with the style of the era. The brooch is in excellent condition and remains a wonderful eye-catcher with a romantic touch to this day.
