Antique Pendant Gold Brooch with Peridots & Pearls, Great Britain c. 1905

A spring day in London in the early years of the last century. The first warm days have lured crowds of walkers into the parks of England's capital. In Hyde Park, the air is filled with the scent of flowers and blossoming trees. Chestnut and lime trees unfurl their first leaves and fresh greenery glows in the spring sunshine. The two peridots in this pendant brooch radiate as if the incomparable green of spring has been captured in stone. Their materials are typically British: colored gemstones, creamy white natural pearls and warm, shiny gold were the most popular materials on the island at the turn of the 20th century. In the c. 1900s, green peridot was particularly popular, as it was considered the favorite stone of the legendary last pharaoh Cleopatra. And as the country on the Nile was part of the Empire in those years, it is not surprising that peridots appeared in pieces of jewellery from those years. Here, peridots and pearls are combined in a graceful arrangement. Tendrils of gold and pearls frame the gemstones and reveal the cheerful lightness of Edwardian fashion. A pin on the back allows the piece to be worn as a brooch. A pendant eyelet, also set with pearls, can be easily removed using a hook suspension so that the piece of jewellery can also be hung on a chain to great effect.
