The artist used very vibrant colours to add some mystery to the scenery and contrast the vivid light in the back-ground. Housed in its beautiful and original giltwood frame. Agnes Augusta Talboys, as she signed herself, was a Bristol artist. Born in the city she lived and exhibited largely in the south-west, moving to live no further than to Weston-super-Mare in the early 20th century. Her father, RA Snell, died when she was 6, leaving her mother a wealthy woman and Augusta was largely an amateur artist. She married George Talboys in 1889 and started exhibiting her animal paintings shortly thereafter. Her sentimental studies, primarily of cats and dogs, were very popular and reproduced as prints and calendars. In the early 1920s she contributed two miniature paintings for Queen Mary’s Dolls House. On her death she left the bulk of her fortune to the Royal West of England Academy, Bristol. She was also a skilled chess player, playing competitively at county level.
