Antique Necklace With Diamonds & Natural Pearl in Gold & Silver, c. 1865

This unusual necklace appeals to us particularly because it is impressively large, yet at the same time leaves a delicate, refined impression. The large pendant is firmly attached to a delicate chain of rose gold, accented with small spheres. A large, high-quality old-cut diamond forms the starting point. A twisted band of rose-cut diamonds follows, winding in three loops around itself and forming the frame for a magnificent natural pearl, suspended within the pendant. In total, approximately 1.28 carats of diamonds are set in silver, while the reverse of the pendant is crafted in reddish gold. Together with the natural pearl, this creates a unique treasure from carefully selected materials. The coiled framing of the pendant reflects the taste of the 1860s, with the period’s characteristic preference for loops and ribbons in jewellery design. The craftsmanship, the type of settings, and the diamond cuts all indicate that the pendant was made during this era. Only the yellow-gold setting of the pearl was previously replaced; it is also set with diamonds and integrates beautifully into the overall design. Diamond jewellery from the mid-19th century is relatively rare; pieces were often altered in later years to follow the latest fashions. All the more remarkable, therefore, is the pendant’s excellent state of preservation. We discovered it in New York.
