This gold brooch is set with a cabochon of purplish almandine garnet. A star is set in the middle of the gemstone, the center of which consists of a shimmering pearl and whose rays are formed by small diamond roses. Articulated gold fringes are attached below the wide gold frame. Hidden at the back is a glazed locket compartment in which a photo or lock of hair can be stored. With a locket compartment, gold fringes and the garnet cabochon with its pearl and diamond star, this piece perfectly combines some of the greatest jewellery fashions of the years around 1870. Lockets were extremely popular at the time and were not only worn as large pendants on velvet ribbons around the neck. Small secrets could also be hidden from prying eyes in the form of brooches, necklaces or bracelets. We discovered this beautiful piece of jewellery in London. According to its design and workmanship, it was also made in Great Britain.
