The Rococo, the courtly world of elegance and luxury did not only radiate from France into the world at the end of the 18th century. Even after the end of the Ancien Régime in the French Revolution, this art of lightness and refined taste experienced new fashions again and again. At the end of the 19th century, for example, the rooms of Sisi and Franz Joseph in the Hofburg in Vienna were decorated in the rococo style, and an apartment was also built for the same empress in Venice: the KuK royalty could thus see itself as the new empire of a Sun King. Throughout the second half of the 19th century, rococo enthusiasm was very much alive: People turned with glee from the era when Marie Antoinette, dressed as a shepherdess, strolled through the gardens of her peasant village in Versaille. A fine example of the Rococo revival is the present brooch from France. At its center, the brooch presents a circular panel with a graceful enamel painting. In the pastel colour palette of the Rococo, we see a beautiful young lady in typical 18th century dress with a high powdered wig. An asymmetrical framing of high karat gold shows typical rocaille ornaments. Small diamond roses in silver settings enliven the rich design.
